SWTWC: Chapters 15-24 Chapter 15: Mirror Maze – water images (mood) - “oceans of mirrors” –dangerous, never can tell what is coming in water, feel like you are drowning, bottomless, panicked -Charles Halloway “I’ll go there, thought Charles Halloway, I won’t go there. I like it, he thought, I don’t like it.” -Miss Foley – What does she see in the maze? What is her flaw/regret? **Only carnival attraction that can not be completely concealed in the daytime **What universal weakness does it play on? The Carousel: OUT OF ODER! KEEP OFF! -runs backward and so does the music -Mr. Cooger becomes 12 years old Why? Purpose?

  2. Carousel – Broken? - runs backward and the music plays backward *Chopin’s Funeral March – symbolizes what? Time - - - gets younger (Purpose/Function?) Robert/Cooger – eyes? -frames Will and Jim as burglars and returns to the carnival -gets back on carousel forward and gets very old (he is dead) hair- “long, spidery, white” eyes- “mummified shut” Freaks in the sideshows of the carnival: Mr. Skeleton Mr. Electico Illustrated Man Monsieur Guillotine The Dwarf Vesuvio, the lava sipper The Dust Witch The Crusher

Will chases Jim to Miss Foley’s house Jim’s actions tell us what? the fight between Will and Jim: What are they fighting over or about? What does Jim want/desire? Robert frames the boys in order to … What does he think each boy will do? Police and Ambulance: symbols of safety/security -the boys feel responsible and want to save Cooger/Robert’s life -when found he is now Mr. Electrico (How is Mr. Dark keeping him alive?) (evil can exist only when there is other wickedness to support it)
