Connecting Rural OhioHistory Highlights • August 2000: ADEC awarded an NSF grant for the Advanced Internet Satellite Project (AISEP) • New Straitsville • January 2003: OARnet awarded grant from the Ohio Community Computer Networkto fund project • April 2003: Satellite dish antenna installed at Masonic Lodge • July 2003: Phase I wireless network deployed • April-June 2004: Phase II wireless network coverage expanded to cover residential and commercial areas • Chesterhill • Winter 2005: ADEC approves OSU funding to provide satellite-based Internet connectivity to the village • June 2005: Satellite dish antenna installed at library and Phase I wireless network deployed • May 2006 Phase II wireless network coverage expanded to cover residential and commercial areas
Connecting Rural OhioHistory Highlights • Village of Vinton • September 2006: ADEC approves US Department of Agriculture grant to OSU to provide satellite-based Internet connectivity to the village • December 2006: Ohio Governor’s Office of Appalachia approves funding for 6 computers to be located at the community learning center (Village Town Hall) • March 19-20, 2007: Satellite dish antenna and Omni sector antenna installed at village’s water tower • May-June 2007: Begin roll-out of workforce development and education programming for the community
Objectives of Connecting Rural Ohio Initiative • Close the rural divide that previously existed in communities through this “rural datafication” program • Create community learning centers for online credit and non-credit higher education courses, training and workforce development • Provide the network infrastructure to support community e-commerce initiatives • Stabilize local rural economies and reduce drain of human capital • Improve quality of life and increase standard of living
