My Questions: • How do the authorial voices of these speakers acknowledge intolerance, discredit intolerance and begin moving toward a solidarity of tolerance? • In pursuit of this solidarity, how do their discourses orient to prior utterances and inflect them with new ideas? • How do the discourses ultimately construe the audience as agents of tolerance?

One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. Creating a shared discursive world.

Ambiguous blame Kennedy: I believe in an America where…no Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote… I believe in an America …where no man is denied public office merely because his religion differs from the President who might appoint him or the people who might elect him. I believe in a President whose views on religion are his own private affair, neither imposed by him upon the nation or imposed by the nation upon him. Are you the people you say you are?

  18. My conclusions (so far): Language of tolerance …is built on a disorienting accumulation of discursive moves

  21. There will always be an “other.” Learning to replicate the language of tolerance may provide a clearer path to repeating the best—not worst—of human history.
