What is a Habitat? The short answer: A place that things live in. The long answer: A habitat is a natural area or type of land that different species of animals, plant, or other organism reside in. Species evolve their features to suit their habitat, and often have to adapt as their environment does so.
What is Adaptation? The short answer: Changing. The long answer: Adaptation is altering a lifestyle or feature to fit a certain criteria, in this case, habitat. Species adapt, or evolve, over time so that they have the best possible chance of surviving in the environment surrounding them.
How Have Species Adapted? To answer this question, we must look at different species of animals. Polar Bears have thick white fur to keep them warm in the arctic, and black skin to absorb and trap heat. Birds Have feathers to make them more streamlined in the air and hollow bones so that they are as light as possible. Giraffes have long necks and tongues to reach the leaves at the highest branches. Stinging Nettles have stingers so that they are protected from predators.
Conservation Conservation is when extra care is taken to preserve species and their habitats. Breeding projects in zoos and protected wildlife parks are an example of this. They have protected many species from extinction when they are extinct in the wild. Red Kites, for example, were shot and driven to extinction in the UK, but were re-introduced after being bred right here in the Chilterns!
