Principles of Reformed Hermeneutics Dr. Gene Haas
Introduction • Committed to two things: • Christians need to build positive relationships with people who experience same-sex attraction • Same-sex practice is contrary to the moral will of God
Principles of Reformed Hermeneutics • 1. Bible is one grand narrative of Creation, Fall, and Redemption and Renewal of all things in Christ • 2. There is one covenant of grace revealed in the Bible
Principles of Reformed Hermeneutics • 3. God’s moral law for humans is rooted in creation • There is a creational moral order • 4. Redemption consists of the restoration of creation and its order
Principles of Reformed Hermeneutics • 5. All Scripture is God-breathed • Inspired by the Spirit (2 Tim 3:16), who is the ultimate author • 6. The Spirit reveals the word of God in and through human authors • Inspiration is organic not mechanical • Revelation is progressive over time
Principles of Reformed Hermeneutics • 7. All that Christians need to know for faith & practice is in Scripture • 8. The leading of the Spirit is always consistent with the teaching of the written word of God • The Spirit never “says anything to the church” contrary to Scripture
Principles of Reformed Hermeneutics • 9. Scripture interprets Scripture • More clear passages must always interpret less clear passages • The New Testament must be the framework through which we interpret Old Testament passages on a topic
