Importance of Public Speaking in MUN • Public speaking is one of the most important tools needed for Model UN • Conveying member state’s position • Building consensus • Formulating resolutions • Limit in speaking time – so, speak efficiently • If it’s your first time, do not worry because your public speaking skills will flourish through practice in MUN • Apply public speaking skills even during informal debate: • Caucus: informally speaking, but keep important public-speaking skills in mind
Public Speaking and MUN • Afraid of speaking in front of a large group? • First and foremost, be WELL PREPARED! • LISTEN and LEARN • Help out in the making of resolutions and make sure you are always in time for roll call • Ask your MUN exec for tips during the conference, we’d love to help!
Tips on Public Speaking • Prepare • Practice • Captivate your audience • Eliminate unnecessary “filler” words (i.e., “uh”) • Pace yourself • Chose a powerful posture • Gesture • Get to the point • Speak elegantly – critique another point of view in a constructive way, rather than criticizing it.
Types of Debate in MUN • Formal Debate • Staff (secretary) maintains a speaker’s list and delegates speak in order they are listed • Delegates have an opportunity to share their country’s point of view on topic • Delegates will introduce their position papers, answer questions, introduce and debate about resolutions
Types of Debate in MUN • MODERATED Caucus • Temporary Recess: formal procedures of debate are suspended • To go to Moderated Caucus, a delegate must motion for it and the whole committee will then vote for the motion to pass. • More intense than formal debate because there is more cross debate
Types of Debate in MUN • UNMODERATED Caucus • Temporary Recess • Delegates meet with each other informally to discuss working papers
