2. Season Calendar- Key Dates • First practices – Week of Sept 1st (next week!) • First games – Saturday Sept 7th • Mid Season Rebalancing - Oct 6 • Team Placements – may be adjusted after 4 games. Provide feedback to your coordinators, good bad or indifferent ASAP • Columbus Day Weekend, no games - Pepperell Fall Classic Tournament (for any team- October 12-14) • Final games – Nov 2rd (Just before time change) • Len Bennett Chill Tournament (NVYSL – for Rec level 34, 56 teams) – Nov 9, tentative • 10Cup Jamboree (NVYSL – for any U10 teams; including newly formed teams) – Nov 10, tentative

Most should be over by 5:30, but you may need to be patient at times. We’ll do our best to notify you if there are known conflicts, though school schedules can change quickly.

5. Uniforms For Travel teams, due to issues last year with our uniform vendor, we switched uniforms again. We understand this has been an expense and inconvenience for many, and hope this new uniform will last for many years. We have received good feedback overall about the new process; however there may be families who neglected to order. We suggest the following: It is okay for players to wear their old jerseys if needed for the first game or two. Buying a new uniform with number is easy – Soccer Stuff in Acton has stock on hand and can print it while you wait ~30 mins, though we recommend ordering in advance.

6. Sandbags • Pay attention to sandbags – each goal should have two on the back bar (NOT the net only) • Text/call Andrew Thomas, 617-308-7496 if sandbags are needed • Lay U8 & Grade 3/4 goals flat, front down if no sandbags • Other style goals have heavier back bars and should be left upright

7. NVYSL info/’Points of Emphasis’ • Credentials will be issued by HSC registrar. Required/worn at games. • Sportsmanship issues continue to be high.  Some teams lost standing in MTOC due to cards. League will be keeping more vigilant track of this and informing coordinators if there are issues. • Refs were encouraged to card coaches.  'Ask - Tell - Dismiss’ approach will be used. e.g. refs will ask you to stop undesirable behavior.  If it does not stop, you will be ‘told’ (where ref also issues a yellow card). Red card/dismissal is next. • Send ref feedback to ref assignor for Harvard (Austin). NVYSL website is broken. • B/G34 – In Division 1, offsides will continue to be enforce.

8. LOTG – New Rules • New rules introduced by IFAB went into effect June 1. • Main highlights: • Law 3 [Substitutions, exiting players at nearest point] • NOT FOLLOWING - Though IFAB calls for field exits at nearest point on the field, we will maintain center line coaches side exits • Law 5 [YC/RC to coaches] • A team official guilty of misconduct will be shown a YC (caution) or RC (sending-off); if the offender cannot be identified, the senior coach who is in the technical area at the time will receive the YC/RC

9. LOTG – New Rules • Laws 8 and 9 [choose goal to attack or ball; drop ball to one team is okay]:  • The team that wins the toss can now choose to take the kick-off or which goal to attack (previously they only had the choice of which goal to attack) • If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper • If play is stopped outside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the point of the last touch • In all cases, all the other players (of both teams) must be at least 4m (4.5yds) away • If the ball touches the referee (or another match official) and goes into the goal, team possession changes or a promising attack starts, a dropped ball is awarded

10. LOTG – New Rules • Law 12 [substantial handball revisions] • Deliberate handball remains an offence • The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick: • the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm • a player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity • the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger • the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm)

LOTG – New Rules • Law 12 CONT’D [substantial handball revisions] • The following will not usually be a free kick, unless they are one of the above • the ball touches a player’s hand/arm directly from their own head/body/foot or the head/body/foot of another player who is close/near • the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which is close to their body and has not made their body unnaturally bigger • if a player is falling and the ball touches their hand/arm when it is between their body and the ground to support the body (but not extended to make the body bigger) • If the goalkeeper attempts to ‘clear’ (release into play) a throw-in or deliberate kick from a team-mate but the ‘clearance’ fails, the goalkeeper can then handle the ball

12. LOTG – New Rules • Law 13 [no attacker within 1yd of wall] • When there is a ‘wall’ of three or more defenders, the attackers are not allowed within 1m (1 yd) of the wall; an attacker less than 1m (1yd) from the ‘wall’ when the kick is taken will be penalised with an indirect free kick • When the defending team takes a free kick in their own penalty area, the ball is in play once the kick is taken; it does not have to leave the penalty area before it can be played • Law 16 [ball in play in penalty area] • The ball is in play once the kick is taken; it can be played by either team before leaving the penalty area

13. Challenger Role • Challenger coaches are head coaches for teams Grade 7 and up (N/A in the fall) • They are resources for other coaches, and will run one facilitated practice per week for your team with your help • They have prepared lesson plans for their facilitated sessions. If you do not get one in advance, please ask. • Use them as a resource for practice planning. • Provide feedback to them. Escalate issues to an HSC board member.

18. New Challenger Coach Please consider hosting a coach for 1-2 weeks. It is a great experience for your family. $50/week is provided to you towards expenses.

19. Paperwork Requirements • All Harvard coaches and adults who work for Harvard Soccer Club need to create an account and register for the 2019-2020 year HERE: harvard.mayouthsoccerconnect.org • Please start the registration right away. HSC Pledge and NVYSL Pledge are built into the registration process this year so there's no need to email me any documents. You'll need to agree to these pledges and a few MYSA items before you can finish the registration and this needs to be done before the 1st game. • New coaches need to have CORI Acknowledge Form and Driver's License or govt ID (passport) checked by Jin – if not tonight then please watch email/coordinate for other times • The referee must be able to look at the ID and match the legal name to the name on the roster and the photo to the person wearing it. • After registration, you must upload "Concussion Training certificate” and make sure you've uploaded your photo (must be a clear head shot of a single person). Not required for Fall but will be in spring: "Abuse Prevention Certificate”, "Safety/Additional Certification”. • After all these are done and your CORI and NBG are approved (takes a few days), your 2019-2020 credential will be issued. Without the credential, you can not officially work for HSC and take the field. The credential is required when you arrive at the field. • Although MYSA allows 2018-2019's credentials be used in September 2019, everyone should start the 2019-2020 registration now.

21. Heading Rules • Heading is NOT allowed in U12 or lower • A header during a game will result in an indirect kick awarded to the other team. • Inside penalty area, kick is taken from penalty line.

22. Other Rule Reminders • Formats: • Grade 3/4 – 7 v 7 • Grade 5/6 – 9 v 9 • Reminders: • Handshakes. Coaches shake each other's hands then stand back to watch kids shake hands and watch for behavior before thanking referees. • Subs. A substitute may take place at any stoppage of play with referee permission.

23. NVYSL Initiatives: Protecting Referees • Zero Tolerance of Referee Mistreatment • If you have a comment or feedback, put it in the referee evaluation form you should be filling out every week. • Remind your parents and spectators of this!

24. NVYSL Initiatives: Balanced Scoring • Goal differential ≥6 is not allowed. League will question coaches violating this. • Blow-outs hurt both teams’ development. Diagnose imbalance early and slow/stop it. • Proven ways to slow/stop a scoring imbalance (increasingly aggressive counter-measures): • Rotate strong players to defense or goalkeeper • Multiple passes before taking a shot • Shoot from outside penalty area only • Only players w/o a goal can shoot • Play shorthanded (isn’t always obvious to other team) • Play for control only: no shots – only passes • If you have a comment or feedback, put it in the referee evaluation form you should be filling out every week.

25. Is The Field Open? • Check the NVYSL website, Field Maps and Status. • The Harvard site cannot be used for Travel game field status • If the field shows as open 2 hours before kick off, the teams must go to the game. • At the field, it will be the referee’s decision if the game is played or not. *** For practices, the field closure will appear on the banner across the home page of the HSC website.
