The Trinity God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit
The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world. Amen..
St. Robert Bellarmine – pray for us. The saints are great ways to connect with the history and teaching of the Church. There isn’t a day which goes by that doesn’t have a feast day on someone connected to it. www.catholic.org/saints/
THE WEAKEST LINK So you think your smart? Are you the weakest link? Following are four questions. You have to answer them instantly. You can't take your time; answer all of them immediately. OK? Let's find out just how clever you really are. Ready? GO!!!
First Question: • You are participating in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in?
Answer: If you answered that you are first, then you are Absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his/her place, you are second!
To answer the second question don't take as much time as you took for the first question.
Second Question: If you overtake the last person, then you are...?
Answer: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST person?!
Third Question: Very tricky math! This is for all you science majors. Note: This must be done in your head only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.
Now add 10. • What is the total?
Don't believe it? Check with your calculator! Today is definitely not your day. Maybe you will get the last question right?

The doctrine of the Trinity is the primary doctrine of Christianity in that it reveals the ultimate truth, the nature of ultimate reality, the nature of God. (It does not define God, but it truly reveals God.) Other mysteries of our Faith tell us what God has done in time (the Creation, the Incarnation, the Resurrection), but the Trinity tells us what God is in eternity. (Peter Kreeft p. 18, God)
The ultimate end of the whole divine economy is the entry of God’s creatures into the perfect unity of the Blessed Trinity. (cf John 17:21-23) But even now we are called to be a dwelling for the Most Holy Trinity: “If a man loves me,” says the Lord, “he will keep my word and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him. (John 14:23)” (CCC260)

The Data for Christian theology re. the Trinity are first of all Christ Himself. On the one hand, he called God his Father, prayed to him, loved him, taught his teaching and obeyed his will. On the other hand he claimed to be one with, and equal to the Father. And he also promised to send the Spirit. The Scriptural data from which the Church derives the doctrine of the Trinity are essentially:
that there is only one God (Deuteronomy 6:4 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one God.”) • that the Father is God (John 5:18 This was why the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but also called God his Father, making himself equal with God. )
that the Son is God (John 8:58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.“ ) and
that the Holy Spirit is God (Mt. 28:18-20 ) And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. [19] Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [20] teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.“
How can we know God? • Reason (Creation, St. Ignatius of Loyola) b) Faith(Revelation and Tradition)
The Knowledge of God by Human Reason A) Instinctively B) By Reasoning Romans 1:20 “His eternal power and deity have been clearly perceived in the things that have been made.” i) on data outside of ourselves ii) on data inside of ourselves
The Knowledge of God by Divine Revelation • Three steps in history: 1) First to Israel, his chosen people. …. • establishes his covenant • gives them his law • promises a Saviour • sends the prophets as his mouthpieces • performs miracles • inspires Scriptures • revealing his sheer gratuitous love (Dt. 7:6-8)
2) The Incarnation” (Second person of the Trinity: Jesus Christ) Scripture is the Word of God in the Book. Christ is the Word of God in the Flesh. • GENESIS 1:1-3 (In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.) AND JOHN 1:1 (In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He was in the beginning with God; [3] all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.)
Jesus is the complete and perfect revelation of God. (St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians 1:15-20 [15] He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation; [16] for in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities -- all things were created through him and for him. [17] He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. [18] He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the first-born from the dead, that in everything he might be pre-eminent. [19] For in him all the fulness of God was pleased to dwell, [20] and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. ) 3)
The Third Person of the Blessed Trinity: the Holy Spirit: When Christ ascended into Heaven, he sent the Holy Spirit who sustains the Church to continue His work.
The Attributes of God • God is one (ShemaDt 6:4 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one God.”) • God is good, therefore righteous, just, holy right, moral (“Be holy for I am holy.” Leviticus 11:44) • God is both just and merciful • God is love • God is omniscient: all knowing and all wise (Mt 10:30 – he numbers every hair on our head) • God is omnipotent (all powerful) --- He who created everything out of nothing can do anything “With God all things are possible” (Mark 10:27, Matthew 19:26)
Exodus 3:13-15 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, “the God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” God said ot Moses, “ I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘The Lord, theGod of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to yo’; this is my name for ever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.
God’s NameYHWH - I AM(Exodus 3:14) The name signifies A) God’s reality, B) God’s oneness, C) God’s uniqueness, D) God’s personhood, E) God’s eternity
