Accountability refers to having shared goals and responsibility for the effectiveness of our educational system in reaching those goals. The term can apply to: students, teachers, schools, districts, states, and the national educational system.
Standards have become central to the idea of accountability. There are different kinds of standards: • Content standards define what students should be able to know and do. • Assessment standards define good assessment practices. • Professional development standards define good teacher education practices.
Standards are created by groups of people, usually including experts and educators. Content standards, for example, represent what the group of people who made them think is important for students to know and be able to do.Standards are most effective when there is wide agreement that they represent important educational goals.
There are national standards, state standards, and district standards. District standards usually reflect state and/or national standards.
