  2. Learning Objectives • To describe various images of God and their sources in the Old and New Testament.

  3. Images of God from the Old Testament and New Testament enable people to form their own image of God.

  4. The Bible • Christians believe that scripture reveals or shows what God is like. • The Christian Bible is divided in two parts: 1. the Old Testament or Jewish Scriptures; 2. the New Testament.

  5. The Old Testament • People speak of God using metaphors comparing God to what they already known from their own experience. • Familiar Old Testament images come: • From nature, • From human life

  7. God is like an eagle…that is powerful

  8. Like the rain…that nourishes

  9. Like a tree…that shelters

  10. Like a rock…that protects

  11. Like fire…that is a guiding light

  12. Like a lion…that defends.

  14. Like a king…who reigns

  15. Like a judge…who is fair and just

  16. Like a mother…who comforts you.

  17. Like a father…who created you.

  18. Like a shepherd …who guides you.

  19. Like a potter…who moulds you.

  20. The New Testament • In the New Testament Jesus shows people what God is like by: • The things he said-his parables. • The things he did- his miracles.

  21. Parables • Jesus said God is like: • A good shepherd. (Luke 15:4-6) • A good housekeeper. (Luke 15:8-10) • A generous host. (Luke 14:15-24) • A good father. (Luke 15:11-32)
