3. Play Situations • Between the 1st and 2nd quarters a stick check is being performed. The officials find 2 pinched sticks, one on each team. The officials gave each team 3 minute non-releasable fouls and the sticks were removed from the game. Both teams were allowed to substitute for both players starting the 2nd quarter with full squads both sides. • Ruling – incorrect. All personal fouls are enforced and both teams must play man-down for the full 3 minutes. The 2nd quarter will start with a face-off. If only one team had an illegal stick they would be penalized the 3 minutes (NR) and the quarter would start with the offended team with possession at center x, no faceoff. Note – personal fouls are always enforced and teams must play man-down to the extent of the numbers of players penalized (max 3). • Between the 1st and 2nd quarters a stick check is being performed. The officials find one of the sticks does not have a cap on the end and has exposed metal. Ruling ? • Ruling – not an illegal stick. See rule 1-7-3 (page 14) quote “A metal handle that does not have a cap-plug on the end shall not be considered illegal; at the next whistle, it shall be removed from the game until corrected.” Same idea for sticks with long strings (> 6”) – see situation 1.8. Stick can be corrected and returned to the game. • Goalie makes a save and runs with the ball up the field into the attack area (Zone 4) and takes a shot. During the shot the goalie’s stick breaks and the officials allow play to continue. The ball goes towards the goal, the goalie removes the broken stick, gets a new one and returns to the crease while the ball is in Zone 4. • Ruling – Allow play to continue unless the goalie participates in the play without a legal stick. See situations 6-5-C, 6-5-D, 6-5-E. Play would be stopped if this happened with the goalie in the crease area. • Note – when goalie leaves crease he is like any other player, distinction made within the situations for goalie in/out of crease. Goalie puts himself in jeopardy by leaving the crease. Sticks are not listed under Mandatory player equipment in rule 1-9.

4. Play Situations • A1 takes a shot. B2 goalie makes a save. A1 interferes with B2 while he is in the crease with possession. B2 then tosses the ball in the air, catches it with his hand and places it back in his crosse. • Ruling – flag down, slow whistle. Technical foul on A1. B2 commits a technical foul by creating a loose ball. Stop play, enforce illegal procedure foul on A1, 30 seconds. Award ball to team B at center x. • How many steps are allowed regarding the legality of a check ? • Interpretation – rule 4-16 – “Body checking of an opponent in possession of the ball or within 5 yards of a loose ball…….is legal”. Note – unnecessary roughness – “excessively violent”, “any avoidable act on the part of a player that is deliberately violent”. Other considerations – “lining up” a player or taking a run at a player. Illegal body check – body checking of an opponent not in possession or within 5 yards of a loose ball……avoidable body check after he has passed or shot……above the shoulders, below the waist, player on the ground. • When lining up for face off A and B players must stay behind the defensive line, which according the book extends from sideline to sideline. Are players allowed in the alleys ? • Ruling – yes, rule 4-4-1 Positioning of other players before a faceoff.

5. Play Situations • Faceoff – a team is man-down and brings a player to the wing area for a man-down faceoff. What are the restrictions on the “hot” player ? • Ruling - the individual that was brought up (the “hot” player), must stay on-sides per the book until possession is gained. He cannot interchange position before possession has been called. Once possession is called, the “hot” player is not restricted but all teams must be on-sides at all times. • Mechanics – off-official on faceoff must watch the hot player and make sure he stays on-sides until possession is gained. • Player is serving penalty. The player serving the penalty moves out of the penalty area with approx 10 seconds left in the penalty and is replaced by the substitute that will enter the game when the penalty expires. • Ruling – correct. The player serving the penalty must serve his penalty time in the box by rule. However, it’s OK to allow the incoming sub to replace him for the last 5-10 seconds. Make sure the penalized player serves the time when the penalty starts. • A1 has possession at the end of the 3rd quarter, playing man-down. The officials advise the team A coaches they cannot have the ball to start the 4th quarter because they were not man-up. • Ruling – incorrect. Rule 4-3-1 exception 1 “In the event of an extra-man situation or a flag-down at the conclusion of any period, the next period shall be commenced by awarding possession of the ball to the team that had possession of the ball at the at the conclusion of the prior period in the same relative position on the field”. • Goalie makes save in the crease and has possession of the ball in his crosse. No goalie interference or goal crease violations and goalie loses possession and ball rolls in net for a goal. • Ruling – goal. Rule 4-8 - the definition of a goal (any loose ball that completely passes through the goal line, regardless of who supplied the impetus) Rule 4-9 has all the circumstances when it wouldn't be counted. • A1 fouls in his offensive half of the field. Where is the ball on the restart ? • Ruling - on a personal foul the ball would be restarted at center x with A time-serving. A technical foul by team A would take the ball away and award to team B at the spot of the foul or outside the attack box.
