Samuel de Champlain • Born in Brouage, France. • Champlain sailed for the country France • He made 21 voyages • 1.) to trade fur 2.) to find new land for France. • Champlain explored much of North America and Canada.
Accomplishments • In 1604, Champlain sailed back to Canada on Pierre de Mont’s expedition. • 1604-1607, Champlain sailed and charted most of the coast of the Nova Scotia. • Champlain founded Quebec City on July 3rd , 1608. • He also discovered the lake that was named for him, Lake Champlain, in 1609. • He extended French influence to the Great Lakes basin.

Onarrival I looked for a place suitable for our settlement, butI could not find any more suitable or better situated thanthe point of Quebec, so called by the natives, which wascovered with nut-trees. I at once employed a part of ourworkmen in cutting them down to make a site for oursettlement, another part in sawing planks, another in dig”
Effects • Champlain has credit for establishing the first permanent settlement in Canada. • War eventually broke out between England and France over the new found land. • After the discovery of New France, the trading of fur flourished. • He died of a stroke on December 25, 1635.
