  2. Purpose To tell the story of Jesus as the climax of Jewish, and human history. To declare the kingdom has come and God's purposes are marching forward in Jesus Messiah.

Matthean Structure • Preparation for Ministry (1:1-4:16) • Galilean Ministry (4:17-16:20) • Jesus uses parables to teach those willing to hear with faith, but the crowds are still embracing him. • Journey to Jerusalem (16:21-20:34) • Note the focus in this section becomes teaching the Disciples and less attention to the crowds. • Passion Week (21:1-28:20) • The Parables become very antagonistic toward the Jewish leadership and call for Jesus’ followers to be prepared for his future coming.

  4. Characteristics • Jesus the Teacher • Organized Patterns • Strong Jewish Orientation • The Kingdom • Emphasizes True Righteousness • Harsh words against the Jewish leadership; but this Gospel is not anti-Jewish. • Always an openness to Gentiles • Future Judgment and the Need for Watchfulness

  5. Strong Jewish Orientation • Davidic descent and thus legitimate claim to royal throne • Substitutes Kingdom of Heaven for kingdom of God • Jesus as a new Moses • Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament. Matthew Has 65 allusions to OT and 43 verbal quotations. h

  7. The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed . . . How shall we picture the kingdom of God . . . it is like a mustard seed Matt 13:31 Mark 4:30
