What is bacterial resistance? • The ability of certain strains of bacterium to develop a tolerance to specific antibiotics to which they once were susceptible.
Acinetobacterbaumannii • This gram-negative aerobic bacteria is a common pathogen in bacterial infection acquired in hospitals. • It is very resistant to antibiotics. • Some strains are resistant to every FDA approved antibiotic and the diseases they cause are considered incurable. • According to New York Times, it is killing tens of thousands of patients in US hospitals every year • http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/27/business/27germ.html?em=&adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1267412412-yP2bfl/3pu4+g34XVmluJA
A New Type of Cure • A new antibiotic has emerged. It doesn’t kill bacteria, but blocks the production of lipopolysaccharide using a molecule called LpxC-1. • It essentially disarms the bacteria
Possible Benefits • Will not affect bacteria that are normal residents in our bodies • Less extreme selective force driving resistance/evolution of bacteria • May work on several different bacteria
