  2. BASIC DESIGN • Expanding course syllabus. • Integrating streaming videos into contents of Powerpoint slides.

  3. CLARIFYING EXPECTATIONS • Introduction of syllabus on first day of class by way of Blackboard. • Teaching students how to use Blackboard to access syllabus.

  4. Examples of Clarifying Expectations • Statement of Course Content Advisory. • Statement of student responsibility for learning. • Clarifying nature and scope of course. • Inclusion of “How to do well in this course.” • Clarifying what is expected of students to earn As, Bs, Cs, Ds, and Fs.

  5. IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY • Linking PP slide contents to streaming videos in class sessions to illustrate points and facilitate discussions. • Topics: punishment; racism; reparations; terrorism....

  6. EXAMPLES OF STREAMING VIDEOS • PBS video on wrongfully imprisoned inmates (Part 2 of course: punishment) • Dave Chappelle video skit on the black white supremacist (Part 3 of course: racism). • Prince concert video on reparations to US Blacks (“Family Name”) (Part 3 of course: reparations). • PBS video on 9/11 (Part 4 of course: terrorism).

  7. LEARNING GAINS • Increase student understanding of what is expected of them (syllabus). • Maximize student philosophical understanding of ethical issues (streaming videos). • Teaching students to apply philosophical skills to their internet research. Historical, medical and other issues often have imbedded philosophical and ethical ones.

  8. GAUGING STUDENT SUCCESS • Quiz on course syllabus on 2nd session. • Examinations on contents of Parts 1-4 of course. • Student evaluations.
