    1. Don’t be evil: Do be good Alix Peterson Zwane June 29, 2007 Hellow everyone, I’m Alix Zwane and I’m speaking today about google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google Inc. As you probably know, google is a company that provides web search, adds, and web based software applications including gmail and google docs. The corporate motto of google is, famously, “don’t be evil” Google.org is our attempt to “do be good.”

    2. 2 Agenda What is google.org? What activities are we currently undertaking Future work For the remainder of this short talk, I’ll review briefly the unique model of google.org, describe some of our current efforts and preview briefly where we are going. Google.org remains a “start up” in the silicon valley sense of the word, despite the fact that we are housed in an established institution, and we are continuing to learn, evaluate, and identify the best space for us to occupy in the philanthropic arena. For the remainder of this short talk, I’ll review briefly the unique model of google.org, describe some of our current efforts and preview briefly where we are going. Google.org remains a “start up” in the silicon valley sense of the word, despite the fact that we are housed in an established institution, and we are continuing to learn, evaluate, and identify the best space for us to occupy in the philanthropic arena.

    3. 3 The vision of google.org Google.org aspires to use the power of information to help people better their lives and to address three major growing global problems:  climate change, economic development and poverty, and global public health.  “We hope that someday this institution will eclipse Google itself in overall world impact by ambitiously applying innovation and significant resources to the largest of the world's problems.”   - Sergey Brin & Larry Page One percent of profits and equity toward that vision. When Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin told prospective stockholders about Google, their vision included a commitment to devote employee time and one percent of Google's profits and equity toward philanthropy, with the hope of some day having greater impact than Google itself.   While the results achieved by our grantees and partners are more important than the amount of money we give, we want to be clear about how we're going to keep those "one percent" commitments.  There are two parts: equity and profit. For the one percent of equity, Google has committed one percent of the outstanding shares that resulted from Google's initial public offering; this amount began as 3 million shares. We have begun to donate and invest this amount and will continue over a period of up to 20 years. Because it is based on stock, the dollar value of this commitment will rise and fall with Google's stock price. We'll follow through on the other commitment - one percent of profit - by taking one percent of each year's profits and donating and investing that too. Our first step in meeting these commitments was a $90 million cash donation to establish the Google Foundation.  In addition, we've announced our first three year target of up to $175 million in grants and investments across other google.org efforts. 4. 4 Google.org is an experiment in active philanthropy In addition to financial resources, we are fortunate to be able to engage Google’s entire family of people and partners, information technologies and other resources The DotOrg umbrella covers the work of the Google Foundation, some of Google's own projects, as well as partnerships and contributions to for-profit and non-profit entities. We've announced our first three year target of up to $175 million in grants and investments across other google.org efforts. we are looking to better understand the inextricable linkages among the changing environment, human health and global poverty. And we're also looking closely at innovative ways to detect the early warning indicators of disease outbreak, mass migration and other potential calamities affecting our increasingly crowded planet, so that the world's humanitarian resources will be in the position to best respond to minimize suffering.  And we have some unique resources from the company in addition to money: innovative technology and most of all, the inspired community of Googlers. We've announced our first three year target of up to $175 million in grants and investments across other google.org efforts.

    5. 5 Climate change We focus our investment, policy and public engagement activities on efforts to dramatically cut greenhouse gas emissions by increasing the efficiency of energy use and deploying cleaner and renewable energy sources.  Some of our initial efforts include: RechargeIT    RechargeIT is a google.org initiative that aims to accelerate the adoption of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and vehicle-to-grid technology.  As part of this initiative, google.org joined with a California utility to demonstrate an innovative vehicle-to-grid hybrid car. Transportation related emissions comprise at least 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions and are continuing to grow at a rapid rate.  A national fleet of plug-in hybrid vehicles would bring deep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, lower dependence on oil, and help stabilize the electric grid. We also announced a plan to invest $10 million into companies and technologies and funded $1 million in grants to organizations that are leading a plug-in revolution.   We are also demonstrating clean energy alternatives via our own plug-in hybrid fleet.  We are collecting data on MPG, average trip distance, even battery life. 6. 6 Global public health Google.org is exploring ways to enable more effective prediction, prevention, control and where possible, eradication of communicable diseases through better access to and use of information technologies. Some of our initial efforts include: Project INSTEDD With initial support from google.org, an independent, non-profit federation initially called "Project INSTEDD" has been established. This federation will serve individuals and organizations by harnessing technology for more effective early warning, prevention and response to natural disasters and public health emergencies.  The global emergence of communicable diseases is a crisis that disproportionately impacts the poor in developing countries. 7. 7 Global development Google.org supports efforts to empower people to improve their quality of life and economic well-being.  Three exploratory initiatives: Supporting Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) development and growth in Africa.   Working to identify and implement critical information platforms which can stimulate better access to capital and to markets for entrepreneurs and SMEs in the developing world.  Using information as a lever to improve provision of essential services to the poor.  We are undertaking three initial exploratory initiatives to understand and address information asymmetries to enhance conditions for more equitable economic growth and to improve access and quality of essential services in the developing world. Some examples of grants that we have made include: We've contributed $5 million to support Acumen Fund, a non-profit venture fund that invests in market-based solutions to global poverty. Acumen Fund supports entrepreneurial approaches to delivering affordable goods and services for the 4 billion people in the world who live on less than $4 a day. We're also working with TechnoServe to build small businesses that create jobs and promote economic growth in the developing world. With TechnoServe, we are funding an entrepreneurship development program in Ghana that includes a business plan competition and seed capital for the winners to build their businesses. 8. 8 Next steps Watch for our Request for Proposals (RFP) We plan to invest approximately $10 million in technologies and companies featuring plug-in hybrids, fully electric vehicles, vehicle-to-grid capabilities, batteries and other storage technologies, and the application of renewable electricity and fuels to green vehicles.  We’re hiring! Later this summer Google.org will publish a formal Request for Proposals (RFP) on our website, focused on investment opportunities in companies and projects that are accelerating the commercialization of alternative transportation solutions which reduce vehicle fossil fuel use and climate emissions. We believe that our investments in green vehicle technology commercialization, coupled with additional R&D and policy grants, will help accelerate progress in addressing the climate and energy challenges of today's transportation sector.
