Magazine NarrativeEvaluation By Ollie Pickersgill
How is the magazine structured? Hero- Alvin Lam Princess (reward)- Fame Villain- “haters” mentioned Dispatcher & father- Referred to but unnamed mentor Donor- Artist involved in collaborations False hero- Other rappers in competition with him. The magazine pages I have created are structured around the main story- an interview with “rapper” Alvin Lam. As he or mention of him occurs on every page this allows a reference to the narrative theory of Propp when discussing the narrative structure of my coursework with classic roles being assigned.
How does the front cover lead you in? The main tool in enticing readers is the pull quote used. In the reality of this magazine The subject on the cover is a new but very famous rapper, and with him being on the cover next to this entices readers in as the quote poses being very emotive and a very powerful statement many questions (use of the enigma code of Bartes’ theory) such as who hates him? Is he perfect? Why is he saying this? And most importantly: why is he saying this?
Analysis of the DPS in relation to Todorov Todorov’s Theory Equilibrium Disequilibrium Conflict Resolution New Equilibrium In the case of Alvin within my Double-Page Spread Todorov’s Narrative theory can be applied to a point, whereas I believe the key note is that the story is not and so when applying the theory I have only gone so far as the stage of conflict, for this is where it seems the narrative reaches. Alvin’s former normal life. Alvin Becomes famous and pressure is put on as records are set He wants more fame and to be recognised as the best … …
Consider the enigma code on all pages The enigma code has been used in the subheading where an outline to the story in given but more information is needed I personally think that the use of Barthes’ enigma code is very important in the sale of magazines. When you consider what the purpose of the enigma code it is to pose questions to the audience. Inevitably this is what draws us in, as everyone prefers answers to unanswered questions. Therefore the use of the enigma code is quite vital in the selling of media as you ‘have to know’. The main way in which this can be done is by only giving fragment of the information people want in order to interest people, but not so much as they must continue to read. As earlier mentioned I have used the Enigma code in the pull quote on the front cover Here the enigma code is used in text and picture, as the initial questions posed are of the picture: what is he looking at? Etc. drawing you into the page, and secondly the section to the left of the main body leads you into the rest of the article with more unanswered questions
