Why Do Portfolios? • Record keeping skills • Writing skills • Computer skills • Record 4-H work / Show Progress • Compete for County and State Awards • Historical document • Record to use in the future for scholarships, jobs, etc.
Where Do I Start? • Keep receipts, etc. • Can be handwritten, Use a typewriter, or computer • Use proper forms • Follow portfolio guidelines listed at the beginning of each section • Have a copy of the judging guidelines • Have a copy of the portfolio judging sheet
General Guidelines • Use white 1 1/2 inch binder (maximum size) • First year is 3rd grade • Use official forms • Can use protective covers (see both sides) • Update each year before submission • Use easy to read font in size 10-12 • Can be written in pencil, pen or computer
Portfolio Due Dates • October 1st for County Competition • Category Awards • Savings Bonds • Most Outstanding • February 1st for State Competition • Scholarships to USU (12th grade only) • Trip to National 4-H Congress (9th–12th grade)

Entry Form • Use the appropriate form • List all current projects or category that are in your portfolio • Needs to be complete with signatures from 4-Her, Parent or Guardian, and Leader/s • Agent will sign at a later date
Section 1 Project Report: Part A • Use the appropriate form • Need a new form for each project each year • Put a green divider page between project areas • Size has to do with numbers – hours spent, dollars, times prepared. • Scope indicates varieties, different types, or animals with which you worked
Section 1 Project Report: Part B • Knowledge and Skills Acquired • Knowledge learned: • Information about the Food Guide Pyramid • What correct serving sizes are for various foods • What foods contain calcium such as dairy products • That calcium is good for strong bones and teeth • Skills gained: • How to measure dry ingredients • How to measure liquid ingredients • How to make pizza pockets
What is Level? • Local - activity sponsored by one or more 4-H clubs. • County - activity sponsored by county. • District - activity sponsored to involve more than one county. • State - activity sponsored at the state level. • Multi-State - activity sponsored to involve more than one state. • National - activity sponsored by National Council. • International - activity including areas outside the U.S.A
Section 2: Experiences & Activities • Cumulative year to year form • List your participation in demonstrations, talks, exhibits, radio or television appearances, newspaper articles written, tours, workshops, camps, judging events, field trips or other learning experiences • Indicate date and level
Section 3: Awards & Recognition • Cumulative form • Enter year • Name of Contest • Project or Item Exhibited • Placing and/or Award • Value of Premiums if received • Indicate level
Section 4: Leadership • Cumulative form • List Leadership Role and Responsibilities • Different types of leadership V – volunteer leadership E – elected leadership A – appointed leadership P – promotional leadership • Indicate level
Section 5: Community Service • Cumulative Form • 4-H related community service • Date, description of service, level, hours
Section 6: Non 4-H Experiences • Cumulative form • Date, description of activity, organization • School • Church • Town • Family What do you want to remember for the future?
Section 7: My 4-H Story • new story each year (1 page front & back) • Place current year first followed by previous years • Your story should describe in detail how 4-H has influenced your life.Give significant detail of personal growth and development through your 4-H project work, 4-H leadership, and 4-H community service. Show such things as how 4-H has affected your self image, your school success, your career choices, your friends, your goals, your abilities, etc. Explain how 4-H has helped you become a better person of character.
Section 8: 4-H Photographs • 1 page (front-and-back) per year. • Current year first, followed by previous years. • Captioned with an interesting description or explanation. • Pages should include the year in which the photo was taken. • Mount with glue stick, photo adhesive, or photo corners. • Photo pages should be inserted into plastic sheet protectors to avoid loss or damage. • Photographs may be cropped and slightly overlapped, but they should not form a collage.
Certificate of Achievement • After second year, place your Certificate of Achievement with updated completion seals following your pictures. • This is the only certificate that should be in your portfolio
The End • Good luck and have fun!! • Don’t wait until the last minute. • Keep you 4-H Portfolio up to date as you go. • Take plenty of pictures!
