Reading is developmental. It typically builds on in stages from pre-reading to fluency K-3rd grade. It is important to meet the needs, styles and level of individual students. In order to do this effectively, we build two language arts groups based on the performance and assessments we have been doing since the third day of class.
It doesn’t matter if your child is in my language arts class or Mrs. Baraga’s. What does matter is that your child learns to be confident in his/her own ability. Both reading groups enter second grade having been exposed to the same curriculum and materials. Small guided reading groups are made within those two larger groups. Grouping is flexible to meet the changing needs of the students.
My Reading Log! You will find the reading log in your "Welcome to First Grade" folder. Starting next week, students will read 15-20 minutes each night with or to someone and record the reading with a short comment about what they read. This too is developmental and should become more detailed as the year and skills progress. I read and acknowledge these entries each week. The Reading Log is part of the homework and is designated as "Independent Reading" on the progress report.
