  1. Constructive struggling World Café Protocol

  2. READ Article • Highlight things that connect with your thinking, make you wonder, or ideas you hadn’t thought of before. • Take notes in the margins.

  3. World Café instructions • Table host will read question • 1) reflect on answer: write notes on paper (1-2 min.) • 2) share your ideas • After the round is completed, move to another table group. Repeat.

  4. I’m a Table Host, what do I do? • Read question #1 to the group. Remind them to jot down key connections, ideas, discoveries, and deeper questions as they emerge. • After everyone in your group has had a chance to reflect, give each person a chance to respond. Be aware of air-time making sure everyone has a chance to take a turn. • Remain at the table when others leave, and welcome your new group. • Briefly share key insights from the prior group’s conversation so others can link and build ideas from their respective tables. • Read question #2 and repeat the process.

  5. Café Etiquette • Focus on what matters. • Contribute your thinking. • Listen to understand.  • Link and connect ideas. • Listen together for insights and deeper questions. • Play, Doodle, Draw on the tablecloths. • Have fun!

  6. Discussion Questions • Round one: What issues or challenges does this message raise for you? In what ways do you agree with or disagree with the main points of the message? • Round two: What teaching actions or strategies do you think support or inhibit students’ willingness to accept the struggle that goes with solving a challenging problem?  • Round Three: How can you help your students develop the confidence and persistence necessary to persevere through a challenge?
