FAITH CGS ToK T3 2013 PJC
What do you believe? • Can you identify any elements of your belief, or your belief system, that could reasonably be described as ‘faith statements’? • “I believe that Neil Armstrong was the first human being to walk on the moon, at 2:56 UTC, Jluy 21 1969” • Why do I believe this? Is any component of my belief based on faith? • Sense perception • Reason • Emotion • Memory • Intuition
What Role does faith play in your life? • What do you take this question to be asking? • How easy is it for you to answer? • How do you translate your understanding of this question into the ToK classroom? • Where does FAITH fit in with the rest of ToK?
Faith as a word • ‘Faith’ as trust – esp. ‘trust in’ • ‘Faith’ as ‘keeping promises’ – ‘keeping faith with’ • ‘Faith’ as accepting assumptions in the absence of evidence (and sometimes in the face of evidence) • ‘Faith’ as the rejection of the need for evidence (often acceptance of other justification)
Faith and culture • Faith is often an integral part of culture • Faith is often overtly subjective (i.e. something owned by the knower without an assumption that it applies to others) • Faith can also be shared knowledge (esp. in ‘faith communities’, like CGS) – a body of shared belief • Is CGS a ‘faith community’? • In what sense is it? • In what sense is it not?
Trust • How important is it for humans to trust other humans (especially)? • How often are we able to place that trust based on empirical or rational evidence? • What does it mean to ‘have faith in yourself’? • What role does faith play in your other interactions with people: • When you do have faith in them? • When you don’t?
Australians all let us rejoice, • For we are young and free; • We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil; • Our home is girt by sea; • Our land abounds in nature’s gifts • Of beauty rich and rare; • In history’s page, let every stage • Advance Australia Fair. • In joyful strains then let us sing, • Advance Australia Fair. • Beneath our radiant Southern Cross • We’ll toil with hearts and hands; • To make this Commonwealth of ours • Renowned of all the lands; • For those who’ve come across the seas • We’ve boundless plains to share; • With courage let us all combine • To Advance Australia Fair. • In joyful strains then let us sing, • Advance Australia Fair.
Commitment • Vows • Is the National Anthem a ‘faith statement’? • Soldiers? • Police officers? • New citizens? • Religious teachings? • Religious teachers? • Scientists?
Shared knowledge • Does religious belief ‘reject the need for justification’? • Or is religious belief ‘a conclusion based on other justifications’? • What ‘faith statements’ might be relevant in, for example, ethics? Is this only true of religious ethics? • What about politics?
Faith and justification • Does faith preclude rationality? • Does faith preclude doubt?
Faith and other WoKs • Faith and emotion • Love? • Faith and reason • Logic? • Faith and sense perception • Doubt? • Faith and intuition • Is ‘faith’ just a particular kind of intuition? • Faith and memory • Are we committed to the infallibility (or the fallibility) of memory? Why?
Faith and AoKs • Does Faith as a way of knowing have a role to play in our chosen studies in the IB? Could you describe that role? What assumptions do we take ‘on faith’ in these AoKs? • English • Language B • History • The Natural Sciences • The Human Sciences • The Arts
