None known prior to the 13th century. • Research suggests there are 321 stigmatics in who there is every reason to believe in a Divine action. 41 are men. • There are 62 saints or blessed of both sexes. • There were 20 stigmatics in the 19th century (1800’s). • There doesn’t seem to be any preferred age (youngest recorded being 8) nor an amount of time (lifelong to brief).
Through history, the position, appearance and number of wounds has varied. • Stigmata wounds open sponteneously and do not respond to medical treatment • The blood pouring from the wounds is considered the blood of Christ and may even have a different type than the person experiencing the stigmata.
Determining circumstances for true stigmata: • Undeniably devout Catholic faith. • Physicians do not succeed in curing these wounds with remedies. • There is no bad odor. • Sometimes the wounds give forth a perfume. • Sometimes the wound excreted blood is a different blood type from the stigmatist.
