Social Studies Content Expectations A description of what students should know and be able to do in Social Studies in preparation for responsible citizenship, successful post-secondary education, and the workplace.
Social Studies Content Expectations Provide the plan for curriculum and assessment development that represents rigorous and relevantlearning for ALL students.
Social Studies Content Expectations • Revise and extend the current Michigan Curriculum Framework Standards and Benchmarks • Selected expectations will become the basis forthe MEAP and Michigan Merit Exam
Social Studies Content Expectations • Build on and extend • The Michigan Curriculum Framework • The State Board’s Policy on Learning Expectations (2002) • Recommendations of the Cherry Commission, the Social Studies Task Force, previous Social Studies Content Expectation’s Group and national reviews • Aligned with • National standards, NAEP Frameworks, exemplary state standards • College Readiness recommendations by College Board, ACT, and the Understanding University Success report
Social Studies Content Expectations Rigor and Relevance are characterized by students being able to: • Apply knowledge in new situations • Solve problems by generating new ideas • Make connections between what they read, hear, and learn in class and the world around them • Make connections to the future • Develop leadership qualities

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The same criteria used to develop the K-12 Social Studies Expectations were the basis for the survey. • RIGOR – appropriate level of intellectual demand • CLARITY – clearly written, logical, easy-to-use • SPECIFICITY – specific enough to convey performance level • FOCUS – emphasize most important content • PROGRESSION – knowledge and skills build on previous learning and prepare students for subsequent learning • COHERENCE – convey unified vision of social studies • The following slides contain the Expectations for your review
