Metadata Standards Directory Working Group (MASDIR)Metadata Interest Group (MIG) Agenda • 14:00-14:10 - Welcome • 14:10-14:15 - Brief overview, communication - MASDIR • 14:15-14:20 - Vision/ideas for MIG • 14:20-14:25 – CAMP-4-DATA • 14:25-15:30 • MASDIR goals, questions, discussion & engagement • 15:30-15:45 - MIG overview and discussion • 15:45-16:00 - Summarize action items; closing remarks
Brief overview • October 2012, first Plenary, low-hanging fruit, … • “…develop a collaborative, open directory of metadata standards applicable to scientific data” • Stakeholders • Not metadata a catalog of repositories • Connecting with DCC (Digital Curation Center) • Disciplinary Metadata Directory (http://www.dcc.ac.uk/resources/metadata-standards)
Communication channels/RDA forum RDA forum: https://rd-alliance.org/node mailing list: rda-cwg-metadata@lists.rd-alliance.org
Candidate Metadata WG • Driving question/s refined: • What functions do stakeholder wish to do on the data? • How can metadata support these functions? • Stakeholders: users of research data Action Items • Revise case statement including timeline (1 month) • Move forward with 2 phases (12 to 18 months) • Phase 1: Enhance the DCC directory of metadata standards (6 months) • Move to open environment, supporting community driven contributions • Implement community driven framework for feedback • Phase 2: Build on community engagement (phase 1) to identify recommended practices for metadata use • Gather data on who use what, community rating/feedback/interaction • Phase 3: Ten years out, metadata may no longer be a word • Conduct assessments with each phase • Log longer term goals
CAMP-4-DATA Workshop • Interoperability • research datasets within and across domains • Universal schemes/models • necessary, feasible or desirable • Metadata Directory sustainability • open and participatory directories
MASDIR goals, questions, discussion & engagement To be – 2 years out, 10 years out • Directory, why, what should it do? • An open directory • What is the best platform? As is…..current status… • DCC (Digital Curation Center) Disciplinary Metadata Directory http://www.dcc.ac.uk/resources/metadata-standards • Any other directories? • How could we aid/feed/make accessible? • DCC is for humans should/could we make it machine accessible? • use cases, should this be an emphasis • mapping, save people from duplicative efforts, converters
MASDIR goals, questions, discussion & engagement Bridging the gap … between “as is” and “to be” • Defining concrete steps • Do you see standards that are missing? • What are you willing to do? • Low barriers to get stuff in the directory • Form for DCC input • Would you fill in the form for your organization, discipline, country, other • Additional data to collect: DCC broken links, news… • Rating of standards, recommender systems
