7. Ronald Regan(February 6, 1911 – June 5, 2004) • Had a successful Hollywood career: radio, film and television actor • Governor of California from 1967 to 1975 • Nickname: the Great Communicator • The 40th President

Reganomics • “trickle down economics” • Lowering top income tax rates would spur economic growth → invest tax savings in business → creating jobs → increasing costumer spending →eventually increasing tax revenues • Congress passed a 3 year program to cut federal income taxes by 25% • By 1983 the inflation rate had dropped. Business revived. Stock market soared.

Iran-contra Affair • The Iran- contra affair was a political scandal in which the Reagan administration officials secretly facilitated the sale of arms to Isreal. • It was planned that Israel would ship weapons to Iran, and then the U.S. would resupply Israel and receive the Israeli payment. • They wanted to free american soldiers with this plan but The plan deteriorated into an arms-for-hostages scheme, in which members of the executive branch sold weapons to Iran in exchange for the release of the American hostages. • We still don’t know if Reagan knew about the arms sales or if he was unaware of this plan. Also we don’t know if the plan was motivated by Reagan’s desire to save the U.S. hostages. But this conflict did raise suspicions about Reagan during and after his presidency.
