Internet health informationadvantages (1) • Patients are better informed • Increases patients control over disease • Alerts to important symptoms at an earlier stage and encourages to seek care • More efficient use of clinical time • Better understanding of information provided by healthcare workers • Patients may be more satisfied with a treatment decision

Internet health informationadvantages (2) • Affords privacy, immediacy, convenience, anonymity, a wide variety of information, and a variety of perspectives on the same topic • Electronical evidence-based medical magazines are available • Medical online support groups offers support and knowledge based on experience

Internet health information disadvantages • Information overload • The quality of information is variable • Could cause unnecessary clinical visits and inappropriate requests for clinical interventions • Difficulty in interpreting scientific data • Accuracy and currency of information • Some socioeconomic groups may have limited access to the internet • Online support groups guidance often lacks the critical perspective

What can we do? • We must offer adequate and sufficient information (oral, written, hospital web-site) • We must give a guidance to patients: how to assess internet based information • evidence-based • verify the professional status of the person offering information • check to see if the material is current • be wary of web sites that make unsubstantiated or biased claims or promote the sale of products • avoid anonymous forums
