Baby Shower & Baby Care Everyone will grab their goodies and then we will begin to watch the Real Care Baby video. As a reminder…there should be NO cell phones or electronics out. There will be a QUIZ when the video is over. It is important for you to pay attention as this is the only time we will go over how to care for baby.

Bonus- At a minimum, what are the most basic pieces of equipment you need to take care of baby (you need to check for all these things before taking baby home!) • An ID (there are 2; a “parent” and a “babysitter”) • 2 diapers (one GREEN and one YELLOW) • A Special Bottle (there’s a sensor in the tip)

Other “GOOD TO KNOWS” • The baby can be abused during quiet time and day care. Don’t let others handle baby. • If other people abuse baby, it is still your fault. YOU are the parent; Baby is your responsibility. • Babies are set on the same difficulty level, but they will not run the same simulation. The programs are based on how actual 3 month old infants behaved during a 24 hour period.

FAQs • Where does the baby sleep? Does it sleep? • Kind of. When it’s “breathing” it’s sleeping. When it’s not doing anything, it’s sleeping. At night, I’d recommend keeping baby close to your bed when you sleep but not in bed with you (you could roll over and push it off) • What do you do about driving? • Baby belongs in its carrier in the back seat. Pull over and care for it if you can. Let it go and record the time you missed a care if you can’t. • What if you are in sports with the wristband? • Talk with your scheduling instructor. You may be granted permission to not wear the wristband have to keep a journal of all cares you provided.

FAQs Continued… • Can I name baby? • Yes, as long as it isn’t obscene • What do I do if I have a problem? • Text or call the number on your wristband. This should only be used in case of emergency. • Who takes off my wristband. • The instructor and ONLY the instructor when you check in.

Baby Demo How do I know what baby needs? As a parent or caregiver, you will soon to get to know baby and what their cries mean. First, always try to feed baby. If that doesn’t work, try to change the diaper, if that doesn’t work, the last option is to rock and burp your baby. Teacher Demonstration 

Demonstration…Your Turn!  We will have 10 groups of 3. You will be practicing with the baby that I give you. Please try out both the “parent” and “babysitter” sensors to make sure they both work. Remember…you must use the sensor and hear it chime BEFORE taking care of baby! Make sure you hold the sensor in the right place of the stomach or back…whichever you choose!

While taking care of baby…Read Chapter 10 (pgs 253-271) and answer the following: • In your own words, define challenging behaviors. • Terms like discipline and punishment related to how you hand a child’s challenging behaviors. Describe what you see as the difference between the two terms. • Describe a positive guidance approach. Explain why it is best practice when dealing with children. • Describe 5 specific Positive Guidance Techniques to support young children developing positive behaviors. • Describe 3 specific Developmentally Appropriate alternatives to “Time Out” for promoting positive behavior for young children.
