Early College Opportunities • Students may elect to take college coursework on their own while still in high school – No high school credit is awarded • Dual Enrollment – courses taken jointly through a partnership between high school and a college with approved curriculum and teachers - both college and high school credit awarded • Advanced Placement Courses – offered through high school w/approved College Board curriculum/teachers – HS credit/college credit determined by accepting college/university • College Board, AP and Dual Enrollment
Dual Enrollment –What? • Dual Enrollment (DE)in IWCS is a program offered in partnership with Paul D. Camp Community College • Students earn college and high school credits for high school approved DE courses • Students take DE courses in their home high schools • DE courses are taught by high school teachers approved by Paul D. Camp Community College
Dual Enrollment Information • High School credits + College Credits (3 or 4) • Transferable courses with grades of “C” or better • Courses and teachers consistently reviewed • Transcripts provided upon completion
Dual Enrollment –Why? • Student gains early exposure to the academic rigor of college level courses • Student earns college credit at the same time as high school credit is earned • Credit earned could transfer to 4-year college • Saves time and money by potentially decreasing the amount of time to complete 2-year and/or 4-year college degree • (*Shared benefit for AP courses)
Dual Enrollment - Now • Credit offered through Paul D. Camp Community College • 9 dual approved CTE courses at both high schools • 4 dual approved CTE courses at Pruden Regional Center • Offered to incoming 11 – 12 grade students • Full tuition currently paid by parent/student • 17 students received dual enrollment credits – 2011-2012 school year
Dual Enrollment – Future • Expand our dual enrollment offerings by moving into core content courses • This year plan to add 12th grade Honors English and Probability & Statistics DE courses • Expand dual enrollment participation • Exploring ways to reduce DE tuition costs to students • Increase recognition of DE opportunities and value • Meet with other area colleges and universities to explore additional DE opportunities
Application Procedure • Student complete PDCCC admissions application www.pdc.edu • Placement testing required for Isle of Wight students • Testing at the PDCCC Smithfield and Franklin Campus • Testing at the high schools during the school year • Registration • Returned completed and signed by parent for each dual enrollment class first week of school • Tuition and fee payments made to School Counselors
