Binocular Defocus Curve of Apodized Diffractive Multifocal IOL in Asian-Indian Eyes Dr.A. Shetty; Dr. M. K. Kummelil; Dr. S.Nagappa Cataract and Refractive Lens Surgery Services NarayanaNethralaya,Bangalore ,India No Financial Disclosure
Purpose • To study the Binocular Defocus Curve and its implications for an apodized diffractive Multifocal IOL (MFIOL)
Materials and Methods • 15 patients who had undergone bilateral implantation of RESTOR 3+ multifocal IOL were included. • BSCVA for distance was estimated by subjective refraction at the end of 6 weeks post op.
Materials and Methods • The best spectacle correction was placed in the trial frame. • Trial lenses ranging in power from +2 to 6 D were placed serially in front of both eyes in 1D increments. • Distance vision was recorded for each set of trial lenses
Materials and Methods • A defocus curve was obtained by plotting the mean binocular visual acuities against 9 values of defocus (ranging from + 2.0 to - 6.0 D in 1 D steps).
Results • 30 eyes of 15 patients • Best Corrected Visual Acuity(Decimal Scale) - • BCDV was 0.94 + 0.13 • IDV was 0.53 + 0.17 • BCNV was 0.97 + 0.08
Results –Binocular Defocus Curve • The mean visual acuity improved from 0.522 logMAR with +2D to 0.0 logMAR with plano. • It dipped to 0.221logMAR with -1 and -2D • Improved marginally to 0.176logMAR with -3 D when the near add was neutralized. • Dipped to 0.954logMAR with -6 D.
Conclusion • The minimal dip of the defocus curve suggests good range of vision and reasonable intermediate vision in patients implanted with the RESTOR 3+ multifocal IOL.
