  1. To Build a Fire

  2. Create a character description of the main character using specific details from the text. Cite words/phrases to help support your claims. • Questions to consider: • How would you describe this character? What do his thoughts and actions tell you about him? • How experienced is the man? Is he a novice? Is he prepared? • What does the man seem to think of his own abilities? • How does the man behave in relation to his environment?

  3. What is the narrator’s tone towards this character? What examples give you this impression? • Compare the man to the dog. Beyond obvious reasons, how do they differ? How is their relationship defined through the narrative London presents? • The man knows how to “build a fire.” What does this tell you about him? What does the man’s failure to “build a fire” symbolize? • The narrator says: “The trouble with him was that he was without imagination. He was quick and alert in things of life, but only in the things, and not in the significances.” What does this mean? Is it a problem? • Is the man responsible for what happens to him? Or is he just an unlucky victim of accident? Justify your response.
