  8. The Victim Context It is part of being human Victim mode shows up everywhere Victim debates occur and are hilarious I have it worse then you. Victimization is easy, a reason to blame

  9. Victim mode gets reinforced • Everybody agrees that I am a victim • It is frequently rewarded • Sense of being in a group • Don’t have to look at myself • Don’t have to work on self or confront own behavior • Safety – main benefit

  10. Breaking the victim cycle • Take risk – relative term for each • Leave the familiar

  11. Are you IN or OUT of the Cave? • In the cave for safety • It becomes a problem when we live there and never come out • When life is about safety – we are in no danger of becoming change agents • Hard to improve results when in the cave

  12. Justified “Victim” • Being a victim is not the problem • Problem is when we gather data to prove that we are powerless. • Being a victim is seductive • Victim list becomes who we are. • Our friends are people who buy our list and others are a pain in the butt.

  13. What Were We Thinking • Shifts in out beliefs result in changed behavior. • Do you operate in the negative or positive context?

  14. FIERCE ACCOUNTABILTY A desire to take responsibility for results; a bias toward solution, action. An attitude; a personal, private nonnegotiable choice about how to live one’s life.

FIERCE ACCOUNTABILITY CYCLE • Prepare Yourself – Fierce Conversation with self • Embrace reality • Explore my options • Clarify results wanted • Take a step in that direction • Gather evidence to ensure success • It is about ownership – you own the problem • From ownership to decisions to action

Take it to the Organization • Schedule and conduct Mineral Rights conversations with each direct report. • Schedule a brief meeting each morning or week to ensure clarity and time lines • Be clear WHY things are on to-do are a priority. • Ask each member to give succinct report on accomplishments and what’s next on to-do list

  24. Hold ourselves accountable and other able – able to take charge, take action, and effect change.

  25. The progress of the world actually does depend on our progress as individuals. It is true for ALL of us

  26. We do leave lasting impacts greater than we can ever know.
