  3. Why Icebreakers/Lead Activities? • We need to be comfortable with each other • Get people to work together • Exercise their leadership (and follower gifts) • Ease people out of their comfort zone • Open minds • Experience new things • Learn something

  4. HOBY Bingo Rules & Instructions • Begin this game as soon as you are finished settling in your room. • Find an individual that fits the description in each box. Write that person’s name in the space allowed. • You may use an individual only ONCE on your sheet. • Once completed notify a staff member that you have completed the exercise so she/he can verify your time. • If you are done, help other people finish their sheets. • Meet as many people as possible and get to know them!  • HAVE FUN! 

Which Side of the Line? • Examples: • Coke - Pepsi • Summer - Winter • Morning person – Night Owl • Basketball – Football • ESPN – MTV • Radio – iPod/MP3 • Original Star Wars – New Trilogy • 2 opposing sides are called out • Students will move to the group that fits them best • Must divide again into 2 groups • When smoke clears, let students declare the new groups and divide again

  7. Radioactive Popcorn • It is 10am in one of the most populated areas of Baltimore. • A container with Radioactive Popcorn has ruptured. • If the Popcorn is not transferred in 30 minutes into a better container, the Popcorn will explode.

Radioactive Popcorn • Your team must transfer the popcorn into a suitable container • Tools and Materials: • Rope • Tire Tube • Unpopped Popcorn in a quart can • Empty quart can • Masking Tape • The radioactive area has expanded and is marked by the tape. • No one can enter the tape ring at all. If you do, you will “die” and can’t play the rest of the game.

  9. Community Building • Ambassadors are told: • Goal: Build the best community possible • Materials: • Markers • Scissors • Money (coins or play money) • Tape • Construction Paper

  10. The Ice Cream Game • Rules: • Can’t leave your town’s boundaries (taped area on the floor) • Jail if you break any rules • Need Permits to build • Positions for your staff • Building Authority • Treasurer • Reporters • Police

  11. How do we start? • Everyone picks their favorite flavor from these choices: • Chocolate • Mint Chip • Strawberry • Vanilla

  13. Behind the Scenes • 4 Stages to the game • 15 minute intervals • Some teams are disadvantaged: • Size of town (taped area on floor) • Less money • Different treatment from officials

  14. What’s the point? • The difference between the haves and have nots • Talking Points • Did the disadvantaged teams realize what was going on? • Did the advantaged teams realize what was going on? • How did you feel when you were placed in jail?
