From Static To Manic Jason Shiroff Denver Writing Project Drupal in my classroom
Our Story • My tumultuous Drupal romance • Function & disfunction • Current status • Till death due us part...
My tumultuous Romance with Drupal • My original (static) website vision • Swept away by Drupal (a summer fling) • CMSes offer so much more... • “Lego” style website creation • Access control & moderation • Digital tattoo protection • Full control
Function & Disfunction Drupal Pros Drupal Cons • Brings web 2.0 to students • Easy to add functionality • Solid access control and website stability • Supports growth and change • Flexible content moderation • Helpful online community • Huge learning curve • Easy to get carried away with features and carried away from the rest of life • Hard to theme and fine tune • Training necessary for users • Documentation is spotty and techie.
Current Status • eodyssey.org • Web 2.0 tools for almost every assignment • Extending the learning time • Multiple ways to show competence & intelligence • Creating community • Digital stories, poems, podcasts, wiki, forums, reflections, videos, profiles...
Till Death Due Us Part • Future plans for my class website: • Improved navigation • More student-led design and ideas • Networking with other schools/audiences (authentic audiances) • Better interaction between students, parents, teachers(creating a community) • Finding authentic uses for the technology
