Mark 15 “Interrupted By The Cross” Mark 15:21
Plans Changed in Jerusalem For Simon of Cyrene! Simon came to worship, (Father/son pilgrimage?) … perhaps the trip of a lifetime! Cyrene, north Africa, maybe 1,000 miles, a solid month’s trip at great expense, great riskOnce in Jerusalem Simon and Jesus were going opposite directions! Interrupted by the cross!
Though the Cross Was An Interruption to Simon’s plans… It was the REASON for Jesus’ plans “Christ…died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18). Luke 19:10 “to seek and save the lost…” Revelation 13:8 – “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”
How the Cross Interrupts Us! Speaks to our core issuesin life* confronts us with our sins / sin– (2 Cor. 5:21)* redefines success – and how to achieve success in life – "So the last will be first, and the first will be last“ (Matthew 20:16)* Jesus came for relationship; not religion! (Hebrews 9:16-17). *Stunning reminder of the extent of God’s lovevs. the conditional love of others (John 3:16).
Like Jesus, You Can/Will Be Tempted To Bypass the Cross A. The Wilderness – Matt. 4:8-9 (alone, no one looking) vs. Hebrews 4:13 B. The Garden – “let this cup pass” Matt. 26:39 (stress) vs. Matt. 19:26 C. The Cross – IN anguish and pain! Matt. 27:42 (suffering) – “come down from the cross and save yourself”
Senior Adult Sunday @ Flat Creek:“Leaving a Legacy” Simon took up the cross of Jesus, and left along legacy in the faith via sons Rufus and Alexander. And you? What will the “books of life/ YOUR life” say about your love for Jesus? Your commitment to His beloved bride, the church?
Result: Acts 2:10 – CyreniansNamed in the Pentecost Crowd Acts 8:1 – disciples scattered abroad Acts 11:20 – preaching to the Gentiles in Antioch (men of Cyprus and Cyrene) Acts 11:26 – first called Christians in AntiochActs 19:32 – 33 – “causing a riot in Ephesus” Oh, that Alexander – “you da man!” Romans 16:13 – Rufus “a choice man in the Lord”
