School Locator Using GIS data in non-traditional ways http://aims.jocogov.org
Requirements • Build a web page that a user can enter an address and get back their school attendance information • The web page would have the same look-n-feel of the school district’s website • The web page needs to be kept simple and user friendly • Include a map of the schools and boundaries http://aims.jocogov.org
Solution • Create a web service to delivery the school information • Enhancements to the IMS • Create maps showing a school and its attendance boundary • Allow for another websites to create maps from the AIMS IMS http://aims.jocogov.org
Remarks • The current IMS didn’t meet the needs and wants of the school district. • Shows all schools • Doesn’t visually relate the address location to the school http://aims.jocogov.org
School Locator WS • The school locator web service provides a service to lookup school attendance areas for a given address. http://aims.jocogov.org

GIS and Web Services • Web services provide information as opposed to simply data. • The school locator web page displays attendance information, not just points on a map • Easily distributable • Data maintained and stored in a central location • GIS analysis is performed beforehand http://aims.jocogov.org
GIS for the masses!!! • Non-GIS professionals can use GIS information. • IT professionals can create applications to consume a web service • End-users may not know the information their getting is from a GIS system, but they still get their information http://aims.jocogov.org
