ACCESS The Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator is a fully coupled system to be developed as a joint initiative of the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO, with university sector involvement to: • Develop anational approach to climate and weather prediction model development • Focus on the needs of a wide range of stakeholders
Project PlanKey Recommendations • ACCESS should import the MetOffice atmospheric model HadGAM1 to provide the initial atmospheric model for ACCESS • The MetOffice 4DVAR scheme should be imported to form the atmospheric data assimilation module in ACCESS
ACCESS-UM Implementation Milestones • 1Q 2005: ACCESS Science Leader appointed • 3Q 2005: ACCESS Project Plan – Option for adopting UM • 1Q 2006: UM6.0 Implementation commenced • Initial prototype version • 1Q 2007: UM6.3 Implementation commenced • FCM Model Development version • May 2007: Bureau/MetOffice agreement on use of the UM/OPS/VAR signed
ACCESSCurrent status – UM6.0 • Daily Met Office global analysis are being downloaded • Daily global and limited area UM forecasts being run starting from these analyses • Daily limited area UM 4D-VAR data assimilation and forecasts being run • Daily global UM forecasts being run starting from Bureau GASP analyses • 12-year AMIP-type climate run has been completed • Single column model has been built and run locally
ACCESSCurrent status – UM6.3 • Met Office still in process of converting to UM6.3 • Implementation still in progress • Major components have been implemented • Global 10-day forecast has been successfully run • Short Climate-mode run has been completed • Single column model has been built and run locally
ACCESS-UMPrac Class • Let’s try out starting from scratch with a new bunny. • I’ve run the UM; now, how do I …? • In the UM documentation, here or at the Met Office, is there any documentation on …? • Can you tell us a bit more about …?
