Born and died:) • She was born in 1818 in Dinwiddie, Virginia, United states. • She died on May 26, 1907 in Washington, DC, United states.
Her Life:) • Elizabeth keckley was a former slave who was employed by first lady, Mary Lincoln during the war to be a dressmaker for prominent women in Washington. • She lived part of her life in north Carolina. • She was an important contributer to the great fight to free slaves. • She addressed the congregation of an African American church to suggest that freed men and women unite to help the contrabands. • She became president of the newly created contraband Relief Association of D.C. and raised large amounts of money. Including $200 from the first lady. • Most people called her Lizzy. Or at least that is what most people called her.
Family:) • She had her first and only son in 1841, son of Alexander McKenzie. • She married James Keckley in 1850. • Her parents were named Agnes Hobbs and she was married to George Pleasant Hobbs.
Why she was well known:) • She was a dressmaker for Mary Todd Lincoln. • She organized the Wilberforce “dress reform” exhibit at the Chicago World’s fair. • She moved into the national home for the relief of destitute colored women and children.
