What is Bystander Apathy? Apathy - A lack of emotion or interest (indifference) Bystander Apathy: • A casual crowd phenomenon • Occurs when a large number of people are gathered together (aggregate) Reasons It Occurs • One thinks someone else will take responsibility • One may get hurt helping • One is scared / stressed by the situation • Don't have time to think (surprise / happens quickly)
Factors Influencing Involvement • Size - If the person attacking is big, there is a decreased chance of helping • If the bystander is with friends, the chance of helping will increase • Once one person steps in, others are more likely to help • Knowing the victim increases the chance of assistance being provided
