  1. The Fund’s Mission To find effective treatmentsand a cure for Fanconi anemia and to provide education and support services to affected families worldwide.

  2. Fanconi anemia (FA): Occurs equally in males and females.

  3. Fanconi anemia: Is found in all ethnic groups.

  4. Fanconi anemia: May affect all systems of the body.

  5. Fanconi anemia: Is a cancer-prone disease.

  6. Currently, the median life span for FA patients is about 33 years.

  7. History of the Fund The Fanconi Anemia Research Fund was founded in 1989 by Dave and Lynn Frohnmayer, who lost two daughters to the disease. Their third daughter, Amy, also has Fanconi anemia.

  8. Before 1989: Most patients died in childhood.

  9. Before 1989: Few scientists were studying Fanconi anemia.

  10. Before 1989: None of the genes responsible for the disease had been discovered.

  11. Before 1989: Families didn’t have anyone to turn to when faced with this devastating diagnosis.

  12. We’ve come a long way since 1989!

  13. Today: 16 genes responsible for FA have been identified, five of them are related to breast cancer susceptibility.

  14. Today: Scientists from around the world attend the Fund’s annual scientific symposia to discuss the latest in FA research findings.

  15. Today: FA patients are living longer—due, in large part, to advances in bone marrow transplant protocols spearheaded byFund-supported research.

  16. Today: The Fund provides education and support to families worldwide.

  17. Much Work Remains The Fund is working to help develop: • A better understanding of bone marrow failure.

  18. Improved outcomes for people requiring a bone marrow transplant.

  19. Effective treatments for the cancers developed by FA patients. FA patients are hundreds to thousands of times more likely to develop certaincancers—and at a much younger age.
