  15. All-Day Kindergarten Subcommittee • On Tuesday, January 29, the Board of Education passed the proposal to offer All-Day Kindergarten at each of the District's elementary schools with half-day kindergarten being offered at Alameda Early Childhood Center.

All-Day Kindergarten Subcommittee Reasons for All-Day Kindergarten • Research studies show many benefits for students • Nationally 60% of children attend all-day kindergarten • An all-day kindergarten program has already been successful in three Farmington Public Schools • Surveys of parents, teachers, and principals showed support for an all-day program • Governor Jennifer Granholm has proposed that all school districts offer all-day kindergarten • Locally many districts will be offering all-day kindergarten next year

All-Day Kindergarten Subcommittee Benefits of All-Day Kindergarten • Higher scores on standardized tests • Fewer grade retentions • Higher attendance • Greater progress on social skills • More time for academic activities • More time for extension and investigation • Equal opportunity for all students in FPS • More flexibility for parents

All-Day Kindergarten Subcommittee Enrollment Data • Enrollment in FPS first grade has significantly increased from previous year’s kindergarten enrollment. • In 2007-08, 165 new students enrolled in first grade • If we are able to attract 80 of the 165 students that have gone elsewhere but then come to our doors in first grade, this could be a potential revenue gain of $816,000 which would offset the cost of implementation.

  21. All-Day Kindergarten Subcommittee Enrollment for 2008-09 • As of April 14th, 738 students have enrolled for 2008-09 Kindergarten • One section of half-day kindergarten will be offered at Alameda Early Childhood Center • All elementary schools will have all-day kindergarten classes

  32. Learning Configurations Subcommittee Conclusions • Conclusive support for specific learning configurations is not clearly evident in the committee’s review of research. • High quality faculty is the primary factor in ensuring success. • Transitions between school levels should be minimized.

Learning Configurations Subcommittee Conclusions • Faculty at key transitioning grade levels should be specifically trained to work with learners at these critical points. • Schools with “smaller” enrollments may provide advantages to “at risk” students. • Local districts may offer specific programming for “gifted” students.

Learning Configurations Subcommittee Conclusions • School districts frequently based configuration decisions on non-academic factors; enrollment trends, space availability, community preference, cost-savings. • Pilot programming can be offered without district adoption of specific configurations.

  35. Learning Configurations Subcommittee Recommendations • Administration of a community survey to better inform configuration decisions made by the district. • Investigate a K-8 school option for feasibility. • Investigate 6th grade placement in elementary buildings for feasibility and utility.
