  2. Rhetorical Questions • What is a rhetorical question?

Loaded Questions • A question that rests on one or more unwarranted or unjustified assumptions. • If there is no reason to think that this assumption is true, then the question is a loaded one. • Loaded questions are similar to dysphemisms in that they both try to give the opposition a negative image. However, dysphemisms are words or phrases, whereas Loaded questions are, well, questions.

Loaded Question Examples • “Have you stopped beating your wife?” • "Does your mom know you're gay?" • "Since racial hatred is caused by diversity isn't it a good idea to curb immigration?" • "Since Bush is the stupidest president in US history is not his policy retarded?" • "Since men are smarter than women shouldn't they dominate the business world?"

  5. Rhetorical Questions • A question asked solely to produce an effect or to make an assertion. • Not intended to elicit a reply.

  6. Rhetorical Question Examples • "Marriage is a wonderful institution, but who would want to live in an institution?" • "If practice makes perfect, and no one's perfect, then why practice?" • "Isn't it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do 'practice'?"
