Why Become A Monk? • To live a life in a secure retreat • To lead a quiet and peaceful life • To escape from a violent world • To devote their lives to serving God
Steps to becoming a Monk • Members of every class could choose to pursue monkhood • Vow of obedience • Initial period, the postulancy, lasted 1 month • Then period of novitiate lasts 1 year • After 4 years of practice and service, vows were taken • They were now monks for life!
Benedictine Monks • These were the most common during medieval times • They took a vow of obedience, chastity, and poverty.
Monks’ Appearances • Wore a variety of white or grey un-dyed wool, or black clothes, depending on which order they belong • Typically had two tunics, two cowls, a scapular, and shoes and stockings • Monks clean shaven and distinguished by their shaven hair called a tonsure (narrow strip of hair around the head)
Monasteries • Lived in monasteries (usually never leave) • Monasteries provided education, spiritual sustenance, food, medical care, and barber services • With wealth, monasteries could grow in size to look like towns
Life of a Monk • Lived under strict discipline: could not own property, could not leave the monastery without consent, could not receive letters, and were sent to bed early • Spent a lot of time in daily prayers, meditation, and Bible study • Had manual work assigned to them like cleaning, harvesting crops, creating garments, and providing education and medical services
The Feudal Pyramid of Power • The Pope, Bishop, Arch Bishop, Arch Deacon, Abbot, Priar, Dean, Monks • Monasteries were under the authority of the Abbot
