3 a.m. • Monks wake up and leave dormitory for church (Matins).
4 a.m. • Monks go back to bed.
6 a.m. • Back to Church again (Prime).
7 a.m. • Breakfast of bread and light beer in the refectory.
8 a.m. • Chapter House- One monk reads a chapter of the Order’s rules. • Monks who have broken rules are punished.
8.30 a.m. • Work or study.
10 a.m. • Mass.
11 a.m. • Work.
2 p.m. • Dinner.
3 p.m. • Work or study.
6 p.m. • Meet in the Church for Vespers.
7 p.m. • Light supper.
7.30 p.m. • Recreation.
8 p.m. • Meet in the Church for Compline.
Walking Debate • A series of statements will be put up for you. • You will either “Strongly Agree”, “Agree”, “Disagree” or “Strongly Disagree” with these statements. • Walk to which poster you feel fits your opinion.
Statement 1 • Life in a monastery was fun, easy-going and had very few demands.
Statement 2 • To become a monk, it took very strict training.
Statement 3 • Monks took vows.
Statement 4 • A day in the life of a monk is busy.
Conclusion • Any Questions? • Why do you think the monks had such a passion for praying? • How many times a day were there mass/prayers? • What time did a monk wake up? • Would a monk have time to do something they wanted each day?
Homework • In your notes copies, write an A4 page on ‘A monk in a medieval monastery’. • You can use your book pgs. 61 and 63, but make it your own!!
