  4. Irony • This is an extremely complex word. It means: • using words which suggest one meaning but which really mean the opposite (a bit like sarcasm — but with far more depth and variety of use) • a disparity (a difference) between what happens and what the reader might have expected to happen, especially when this disparity seems ludicrous (laughable) Hodder Education Revision Lessons

  5. Example • ‘British teenagers are the binge-drinking champions of Europe’ (Jenny Hope, Item 2) • This clever headline uses the first meaning of irony effectively. It uses words to suggest one meaning but really intends the opposite of that meaning. Hodder Education Revision Lessons

  6. Pausefor thought • How is Jenny Hope being ironic? • Consider what her deliberate use of the word ‘champions’ • literally suggests about British teenagers • really suggests about British teenagers Hodder Education Revision Lessons

Answer • ‘British teenagers are the binge-drinking champions of Europe’ • The literal suggestion is that they have achieved a very worthwhile and praiseworthy status in Europe because they have proven themselves to be superior in a positive way. • The real meaning is that they are an embarrassment because the thing that they excel at is binge-drinking which is clearly a very negative activity. • The irony arises out of the disparity (difference) between the literal meaning and the real meaning.
