  2. What is a Spectacled Owl? • Its scientific name is Pulsatrixperspicillata • Know as the Chouette à lunettes in French; • the Brillenkauz in German; • the Muructutu in Portugese; • and the Urucureá in Spanish.

  3. What is a Spectacled Owl? • They are a large species of owl from Mexico and Central America. • They live in tropical rainforest and woodland. • They eat small mammals, insects, caterpillars and crabs.

  4. Fun Spectacled Owl Facts • Juvenile Spectacled Owls look like negative photo versions of their parents. They can take up to five years to reach their full adult plumage. • Male and female Spectacled Owls will duet with each other near their breeding site. • The female’s song sounds a bit like a steam-whistle!

  5. Why Spectacled Owls? • Often when people draw a cartoon of an owl they draw it wearing glasses – the quintessential image of a wise old owl. • However people may not realise there is a real life Spectacled Owl! • Spectacled Owls are under threat from man’s activities so need protection in order to survive.

Why Spectacled Owls? . . . continued • By helping to protect top predators such as the Spectacled Owl, conservationists have to protect entire habitats and ecosystems. • Only a healthy eco-system with the right habitat conditions and enough food to support prey species will have predators at the top of the food chain.

  7. Main threat to Spectacled Owls The Spectacled Owl lives in tropical rainforest and like many other species of owl is a victim of deforestation.

  8. What is causing the deforestation in South America? • In Central America, 40% of all the rainforests have been cleared or burned down in the last 40 years,. The reasons are many and complicated, though these are some of the main ones . . .

  9. Causes of deforestation . . . continued • Cattle Ranches. • European countries have turned to Brazil for 75% of their meat imports. • In Central America, two-thirds of lowland tropical forests have been turned into pasture since 1950.

  10. Causes of deforestation . . . continued • Spread of farming. • The expanding soybean farming industry is the second highest cause of deforestation in South America

Causes of deforestation . . . continued • Logging • Provides raw materials for construction and paper industries. • In Brazil, the Grand Carajas Project, a huge milling development to provide cheap raw materials for the world market, will occupy an area the size of Britain and France combined.

  12. Causes of deforestation . . . continued • Spread of urbanization. • Mining • Corruption. • In Brazil, ranching is used to claim title to land, often for speculative mineral development. Over half the largest ranches in Amazonia have never sent cattle to market.

  13. How can you help? • There are lots of different ways in which you can help protect the Spectacled Owl and its forest habitat. Here are just a few ideas . . .

  14. How can you help? • Buy paper and wood products with the FSC mark. The FSC mark assures the consumer that the wood contained in a product originates from forests that meet high environmental, economic and social conditions. Visit www.fsc-uk.org for more information. • Better still reduce your use of these products and recycle them wherever possible!

  15. How can you help? • South America is becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination. If you are planning your next holiday here why not consider an eco holiday? There are plenty to choose from, just ask your travel agent. This way your holiday will support the local economy AND help protect the Spectacled Owl’s habitat.

  16. How can you help? • Eat less beef or check that the beef you do eat is produced in countries that are not destroying rainforest in order to supply it.

  17. How can you help? • DO buy nuts, biscuits and cereals made from rainforest products. It gives farmers there a reason to KEEP the trees & plants and not cut them down for other crops. • Look for the Rainforest Alliance logo which shows that a product has certified levels of environmental, social and economic sustainability.

How can you help? • Invest in rainforest communities. • For example the Rainforest Action Networks’ Protect-an-Acre Program contributes directly to forest communities struggling to protect their rainforest homelands through small grants to local groups. Protect-an-Acre provides funding to help forest peoples gain legal recognition of their territories, develop locally-based alternative economic initiatives, and resist destructive practices such as logging and fossil fuel development.

  19. How can you help? • Join a conservation organisation such as the World Owl Trust. The more members conservation organisations have the more governments have to listen to them and the more pressure they can put on politicians to make positive changes.

  20. How can you help? • Why not adopt a Spectacled Owl right here at the Centre? • Your donation helps pay for the owls food for a year and you gets lots of goodies in return!
