  2. Early Life • Born on September 14, 1849 in Ryazan, Russia • Oldest of 10 children • His father was the village priest • His mother was the daughter of a priest

  3. Education • First attended the Ryazan Ecclesiastical High School to be a priest • Inspired by Charles Darwin's The Origin of the Species • Enrolled at the University of Saint Petersburg • Got the degree of Candidate of Natural Sciences • Proceeded to the Academy of Medical Surgery where he received his doctorate

  4. Field of Research • Contributed to the field of Psychology, however he was not a Psychologist • Had a major influence on both the fields of Behaviorism and the Learning Theory • Originally a natural scientist, Pavlov accidentally stumbled upon his theory of Classical Conditioning, pushing him into the field of Psychology.

Furthering the Disciplines • Didn't like the field of psychology • Major influence on Behaviorism • His work on the study of conditioning was used by some behaviorists as a form of learning • His discovery and research on reflexes influenced the growing behaviorist movement • His work was often sited by John B. Watson

  8. Credibility and Validity • Arguments against involved: • the organism’s ability to detect the differences between the stimuli • Responding to only one or a few stimuli • Largely acceptedas true • Expanded upon and brought into the larger category of behaviorism later on

  9. Importance of Credibility • Used to train animals • Helps deal with modern psychological issues such as: • Anxiety • Phobias • Addiction

  10. Death • Died of double pneumonia on February 27, 1936 at aged 86 in Leningrad, Soviet Union • His remains are buried in the Volkovskoye Memorial Cemetery in St. Petersburg • Now has a memorial museum in Ryazan, in his former home
