Double Replacement Reactions

Double Replacement Reactions. OBJECTIVES: Recognize a double replacement (D.R.) reaction. Predict the products of a D.R. reaction. Predict whether a D.R. reaction will occur using solubility rules or formation of gas or H 2 O (l) (neutralization reaction).

  1. Double Replacement Reactions • OBJECTIVES: • Recognize a double replacement (D.R.) reaction. • Predict the products of a D.R. reaction. • Predict whether a D.R. reaction will occur using solubility rules or formation of gas or H2O(l) (neutralization reaction). • Complete and balance any D.R. that will occur.

  2. Double Replacement • Two things replace each other. • AB + CD  AD + CB • For Products: • Formulas can and will change • Look up charges for each ion • Do 1:1 or criss-cross • Once formulas are written: • Take inventory • Balance!

  3. Example • Potassium Iodide + Lead (II) Nitrate

  4. Will the Reaction Happen? • Will only happen if: • A precipitate forms. • A gas forms. • Water forms.

  5. Let’s Practice on Page 23
