Double Replacement Reactions

Double Replacement Reactions. High Solubility means that a lot of compound will dissolve in water ( > 0.1 moles per 1 L). Predicting Solubility. Low Solubility means very little compound will dissolve in water (< 0.1 moles per 1 L). K 2 SO 4. High Solubility. AgCl. Low Solubility. BaCl 2.

  1. Double Replacement Reactions

  2. High Solubility means that a lot of compound will dissolve in water (> 0.1 moles per 1 L) Predicting Solubility Low Solubility means very little compound will dissolve in water (< 0.1 moles per 1 L)

  3. K2SO4 High Solubility AgCl Low Solubility BaCl2 Ba2+ High Solubility

  4. Cu2+ CuI2 High Solubility PbSO4 Low Solubility CoS Co2+ Low Solubility Rb2SO3 High Solubility

  5. Double replacement reactions occur when the metal ions of two aqueous compounds switch places. A formation of a precipitate, a compound with low solubility, causes the reaction to occur. AgNO3(aq) + NaCl (aq)  AgCl (s) + NaNO3 (aq) low solubility high solubility You must have at least one low solubility product to have a reaction! Note: low is (s) and high is (aq)!

  6. Al3+ OH- Sr2+ NO3- Sr(OH)2(aq) + Al(NO3)3 (aq)  + Sr(NO3)2 3 2 2 Al(OH)3 (s) 3 (aq) Al 3+

  7. H2SO4(aq) + Ca(NO3)2(aq)  CaSO4 + (s) 2 HNO3 (aq) low high no reaction NaCl MgCl2(aq) + Na2SO4(aq) MgSO4 + (aq) (aq) high high Sr(OH)2(aq) + BeSO4(aq)  SrSO4 + Be(OH)2 (s) (s) low low two reactions

  8. Double replacement reactions occur when something new is produced. If a product is solid, liquid, or gas, the reaction will happen. Neutralization Reactions HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) NaCl(aq) + HOH(l) Acid + Base  Salt + Water

  9. Double replacement reactions occur when something new is produced. If a product is solid, liquid, or gas, the reaction will happen. Acid Carbonate Reactions 2HNO3(aq) + Na2CO3(aq) 2NaNO3(aq)+ H2CO3(aq) 2HNO3(aq) + Na2CO3(aq) 2NaNO3(aq)+H2O(l) + CO2(g) carbonic acid breaks down to form carbon dioxide and water Mento craziness Myth Busters
