What is Really Important? • Some things matter, some don’t. Wisdom knows the difference. • In the area of religion, God is the deciding factor. • “In matters of faith – Unity; In matters of opinion – liberty; In all things – love.
“Faith” • If God has spoken – it’s a matter of faith, Rom. 10:17 • What must I do to be saved? If God has spoken, we can’t intervene. • Items of worship – If God has spoken, we can’t change anything. • Result is unity, if we can demonstrate God’s will.
Expediency • “Useful for effecting a desired result”- Webster. (Profitable) • Some things God has not specified. To facilitate a command we are authorized… • Matt. 28:18-20 – How do we “go”. Bibles, tracts, etc as an aid to teaching. • Our judgment may differ on unspecified things.
Examples • Paul and Barnabas on Mark – Acts 15:36ff • 1 Cor. 8 – liberty limited by love. Phil. 2:3f • 2 cautions – 1)We may fail to recognize a thing as expedient. 2) We may exalt an expedient into a law.
Matters of Indifference • Rom. 14 • I Cor. 8:8 • Lord’s Supper first or last? • Color of carpet, or whether to have carpets or not. • I Cor. 8:13 – love (consideration) regulates.
