Biology Scavenger Hunt Pt.2 Red Team! Brett, Taylor, James, Justin
A taproot= 2 pts Roots go straight down, and spread out along the center.
An organism with a type 2 survivorship curve= 2 pts Type 2 survivorship curves do not happen often in nature, but they usually occur in species of large birds.
A drupe= 1 pt A drupe is a type of fruit . Drupes have a fleshy outer part that surrounds a shell of endocarp with a seed inside, like the pit of a peach.
An aggregate fruit= 1 pt Raspberries are aggregate fruits! Aggregate fruits from single flowers that have multiple carpels which are not joined together. The raspberry follows these guidelines.
A tertiary consumer= 1 pt The sign says it eats plants. (primary producer), insects (primary consumer), and lizards (secondary consumer)
Secondary consumer= 1 pt Eats smaller animals
Thigmotropism= 2 pts Movement in which an organism grows in response to touch or stimuli; Occurs when plants grow around a surface such as a pot or wall. Climbing plants display thigmotropism.
Food Web= 2 pts Lion eats duiker and bird and deer Bear eats fish Duiker eats grass Bird eats turtle, and fish Turtle eats grass Deer eat grass Fish eats grass Grass gets energy from sun
Carpel or pistil= 2 pts The carpel or pistil of the flower is the female reproductive organ of a flower; relatively large and contains stigma, style, and ovary.
A community= 2 pts Interacting organisms
Stamen= 2 pts ANTHER Male reproductive organ of the flower, has the stalk or filament and the head or anther. FILAMENT
Bryophyte= 1 pt Moss is a common bryophyte
Seed Dispersal by Wind or Water= 1 pt This shows the main cactus plant, and all of the mini cactuses starting to pop out of the ground on the ground beside it and nearby.
Reptile= 1 pt An iguana is a reptile (personal item is circled). Scales, lungs, 3 chamber heart, etc…
A Natural Animal Mutation= 2 pts This is an albino claw frog, and albinism is caused by a mutation of several genes. Regular color
A detritivore= 2 pts Earthworms are detritivores, which are hetertrophs that obtain nutrients from decomposing organic matter.
Symbiosis= 1 pt Symbiosis is the living together of unlike organisms from which both organisms benefit. The clownfish and the sea anemone represent symbiosis.
Member of Porifera= 2 pts The sea sponge is a member of porifera.
Member of Echinodermata= 2 pts The starfish is a member of echinodermata.
Soil erosion= 1 pt The soil at the water’s edge is being swept away by the water, hence soil erosion.
Amphibian= 1 pt Toads are amphibians; cold-blooded, juvenile water-breathing from to adult air-breathing form, etc…
An arachnid= 1 pt The Goliath Bird Eater is a spider, not to mention the biggest spider in the world! Spiders are arachnids because they have 8 legs.
A mollusk= 1 pt Snails are gastropods, which are in the phylum of Mollusca, and are some of the most classified species in Mollusca.
Mimicry= 1 pt This harmless snake mimics the pattern of a deadly venomous snake as a technique for defense against predators.
Member of Cnidaria= 2 pts Jellyfish are definitely a member of cnidaria!
An omnivore= 1 pt The kinkajou is an omnivore, meaning it can eat plants and meat.
Reproductive structure of a plant= 1 pt The stamens are the male reproductive organs of the flower.
Monocot flower= 1 pt Monocot flowers have petals in multiples of 3, this flower has 6 petals.
Ascomycote= 2 pts Yeast is used for fermentation for alcohol in beer, and yeast is an ascomycote.
A nonrenewable resource= 1 pt Once this is all used up it will not be possible to produce it anymore.
Habitat fragmentation= 1 pt The road is splitting the habitat apart.
Cryptic coloration= 1 pt Camouflage into one another
Seed dispersal by animals= 1 pt Birds eat seeds and when they are digging around for them some may drop, hence seed dispersal.
Predation= 1 pt Predation is a biological interaction where a predator goes after it’s prey. This is a spider in it’s web with a small moth wrapped up in the web down to the left. The predator is the spider and the moth is the prey. *Paper behind web because with the plants behind the spider web, you couldn’t see the spider or the moth!
Two different life stages of the same organism= 2 pts One turtle is a full-grown adult, the other is still a premature adult
Phototropism= 2 pts The bald Cypress grows toward the light, and spreads out it’s leaves to collect more sunlight.
Tepal= 2 pts Tepal is the outer part of the flower, includes the petal
Natural Carbohydrate= 2 pts Plants produce glucose, a carbohydrate.
Gravitropism= 2 pts Stems grow in the opposite direction of the gravitational pull
An organism with radial symmetry= 2 pts Circular design
A gymnosperm= 1 pt Needles, coniferophyta, no flowers
An example of asexual reproduction= 2 pts When the wind blows, the seeds from the flower fall on the ground and grow and reproduce.
Zygomycote= 2 pts Bread mold is classified as a zygomycote.
A sporophyte and gametophyte= 2 pts A fern undergoes alternation of generations. You can see the spores on the underside of the plant.
Male Pine Cone= 2 pts Smaller, doesn’t contain all the seeds
Female Pine Cone= 2 pts Larger, fatter, contains seeds
Bacillus= 2 pts Chain-like bacterial patterns (Taken during class)
Spirillum= 2 pts Spiral-shaped bacteria (Taken during Class)
Coccus= 2 pts Circle-shaped bacteria (Taken during class)
